Why Do I Have Shin Splints?

BOOK ONLINE

Shin splints are a general term used to refer to the sharp pains that occur down the front or inner part of the lower leg. Shin splints are caused by repetitive stresses that may inflame the bone that the shin muscles attached to (Tibia) and/or that cause myofascial strain to the muscles that attach. The Tibialis Posterior muscle may be involved which is common in people who have overpronation foot problems.  Alternately, the Leg/FootExtensor muscles such as Tibialis Anterior and Extensor Digitorum Longus may become strained.shin-splints

Shin Splints are a common complaint, particularly among runners as well as in people who are on their feet a lot or walk a lot. It may start out as a dull ache but may also present suddenly at the beginning of an intense exercise program with high impact, particularly in people who have not taken the time to warm up properly, who need custom foot orthotics or who need help in choosing proper shoes for their feet.  Shin Splints commonly develop in people with higher-than-average foot arches and may be slow to heal, particularly in athletes. There are effective remedies and treatments for shin splints.
