In November/December 2018, a research article was published in the “Journal of the American Podiatric Medical Association“, which concluded that using a combination of foot mobilization, a toe separator and exercise over a 3 month period, resulted in an average reduction in big toe deformity angle of approximately 9 degrees.

With this natural bunion treatment,  pain was significantly reduced and all muscles groups showed increased strength, including ankle dorsiflexion, big toe plantarflexion, big toe abduction and toe grip strength.

Even more exciting is that at one-year follow up, many of these changes persisted. All findings were statistically- significant.

Fifty six women with moderate Bunions/Hallux Valgus (deviation of the big toe between 20 – 40 degrees), were included in the study.

Though more research is needed to study which of the three interventions were most effective, this study provides evidence that foot joint mobilization is potentially an effective bunion treatment, for reducing bunion pain AND reducing big toe deformity, when combined with a toe separator and exercises.

Dr. Horowitz is trained and experienced in manipulating all peripheral joints in the body. She has been using mobilization and manipulation to ease bunion pain with good success for many years.
