Causes of Sciatica include degenerative and acquired spinal diseases that result in pressure and inflammation of the Sciatic nerve.

Spinal Disc Herniation (“slipped or bulging disc”). Sciatica pain is worse sitting and bending forward and relieved by standing

• Spinal Stenosis, a narrowing of the central spinal canal. Sciatica pain is worse by standing upright, walking and relieved by leaning forward and is largely felt in the buttocks.

• Spondylolisthesis, the slippage of one vertebra over another, that narrows the space through which the nerves exit

• Spinal Osteoarthritis, affecting the space where nerves exit from between each vertebra

• Tumours (less common among causes of Sciatica)

There are various Risk Factors for Sciatic Nerve Pain that can be taken into account.
